CHEMICAL RECOVERY MINISTRY OPENS
(more pictures)

When Shimer College put their buildings up for sale, I began to pray. Their proximity to First Baptist Church seemed an ideal ministry opportunity but the timing was wrong. We had the vision and the passion but not the finances nor the people.

But things happen when you pray. God answered my prayer when Kevin Means came to worship one Sunday and let us know that he had opened BAM House, a home for men who are recovering from chemical dependency. At a subsequent meeting we discussed ways that we could partner in this ministry. FBC provides spiritual counsel for this Christian ministry as well as whatever material help we can.

BAM House focuses on the spiritual and behavioral development of their clients to help them find God's purpose for their lives and become more responsible and productive members of society. The program services include:

* Housing and facilities
* Resident referrals for physical and mental health, substance abuse counseling, spiritual
    counseling, vocational and employment resources.
* Peer led group meeting 5 times a week
* Recovery education once a week
* Bible study three times a week
* Spiritual 12 step recovery meetings
* Personal finance education
* Employment assistance
* Veterans assistance
* Homeless services
* Criminal justice services

It is the vision of BAM House to help them identify God’s purpose for their life. By becoming aware of the basic teachings of Jesus Christ and Christian principles, clients will clearly see how their chemical dependency is but a symptom of deeper spiritual emptiness.

Part of our partnership with BAM House includes Celebrate Recovery, a Christ-centered, 12 step recovery program based on the Beatitudes of Jesus Christ. Kevin Means is an experienced worship leader, who has led Celebrate Recovery for the Salvation Army. The program is not just for substance abusers. Celebrate Recovery also helps people with addictions to gambling, sex, love, pornography, shopping and work, and those who struggle with control, anger, eating disorders and low self esteem.

Along with BAM House and the soon-to-come Celebrate Recovery, FBC hosts Narcotics Anonymous and Overeaters Anonymous on Wednesday nights.
